Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

pragna skin and laser clinics

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a regenerative treatment. Platelets in our blood are loaded with growth factors and peptides which repair and regenerate tissues.

How is PRP treatment useful in dermatology?

PRP therapy is used in dermatology and aesthetic medicine to regenerate the regressing hair follicles in patterned alopecia, repair acne scars and other scars like accident and surgical scars. Also, PRP can stabilize pigment-forming melanocytes and help in reducing pigment problems like melasma. Because of its collagen stimulation properties, PRP therapy is widely used for reducing fine lines and wrinkles and skin rejuvenation.

How is PRP prepared?

When you opt for PRP therapy, blood is collected in specified kits. It will be centrifuged; that is, it is rotated in an instrument called ‘Centrifuge’ at a specific speed. This helps in separating the platelets from other red blood cells and white blood cells. This concentrated platelet collection with plasma is collected into small syringes in a sterile environment and injected in small aliquots.

How painful is the PRP treatment?

As fine needles are used, the pain will be less, but we will give either block anesthesia or a numbing spray/cream to reduce the pain.

How frequently should PRP therapy be taken?

PRP therapy is usually given once a month.

For alopecia treatment, how many sessions of PRP required?

In patterned alopecia, 4-6 sessions of PRP are required once a month. Later, you may require three to four maintenance sessions a year, depending on the stage and severity of androgenic alopecia.

How does PRP help in the case of acne scars?

In Acne scars, PRP is usually used along with fractional lasers or micro-needling (either plain derma roller or radiofrequency based micro-needling). After this procedure, PRP is either injected or applied and infused through the channels created by needing or laser. The peptides and growth factors in PRP will stimulate new collagen formation, filling and tightening the pitted scars. When combined with these procedures, the result will be additive of both procedures together.

How frequently PRP therapy is done for skin rejuvenation and anteing/how is it helpful?

It is proven that PRP therapy stimulates new collagen and elastin and stimulates proteoglycans, which are support tissue of our skin, also improves hydration, and keeps the skin soft and supple. Depending on the skin type and condition PRP is given monthly 4-5 sessions, and maintenance would be twice or thrice a year.

What are the side effects of PRP?

Pain during the procedure, usually mild, can be taken care of with topical anesthesia creams or sprays. You may have small bruises here and there in sensitive skin areas that will heal in a couple of days. As PRP is the product of your own blood, allergic reactions are rare.

How to take care post PRP therapy?

After Hair PRP, wash your hair after few hours of therapy. You can start applying your home care minoxidil lotions the very same day.

Avoid face washes for a day after skin PRP. Use mild cleansers. Apply antibiotic and healing creams prescribed by us for two days. You can use makeup after 3 days.
